Originally formed in the late 1860s to supply water to the township, Lake King is now a tranquil wetland nestled between the Rutherglen Golf Course, BIG4 Holiday Park, Apex Playground and the Rutherglen Bowling Club.

A favourite destination for both locals and visitors, the wetlands feature the picturesque Arthur Mann Scenic Walk, a one-kilometre loop ideal for birdwatching, photography and leisurely strolls.

The Rutherglen Wetlands are home to a diverse range of birdlife, including ducks, grebes, ibis, spoonbills, herons, egrets and cormorants. Birdwatchers may also spot colourful species such as Superb Fairy-wrens, Eastern Rosellas and Red-rumped Parrots, as well as birds of prey including Brown Falcons and Nankeen Kestrels. The wetlands provide excellent birdwatching opportunities year-round, particularly during spring when waterbirds are at their most active.

While exploring the area, be sure to visit the Tommy McRae Tribute Sculpture, which celebrates the region’s rich Aboriginal and cultural heritage.

Facilities at the wetlands include public toilets, barbecue areas, a children’s playground and a skate park. While swimming is not permitted in Lake King, the nearby Rutherglen Swimming Pool offers a refreshing alternative during the warmer months.
